The robust flavor of homemade blue cheese dressing elevates everything from green salads to hot wings! With a few simple ingredients you can create your own blue cheese dressing using any type of blue cheese that you prefer as well as tangy buttermilk, creating a rich and creamy dressing everyone will love.

Delicious creamy blue cheese dip served in a glass jar with herbs.

Homemade buttermilk blue cheese dressing is an easy recipe that is certain to rival your favorite brand. We love making salad dressings at home, they are really easy to put together, much healthier, and more affordable.

Next time you are looking to elevate your favorite salad check out some of our favorite homemade dressings like our Easy Homemade Dairy/ Gluten-Free Salad Dressing, Easy Apple Cider Vinaigrette, or our Charred Whole Lemon Salad Dressing.

    What You're Going to Need...

The ingredients for creamy blue cheese dressing measured out on a wooden board.
    • Blue Cheese - we used Roth Kase buttermilk blue cheese for this dressing, it's so rich and creamy we think it makes the best blue cheese dressing.
    • Greek Yogurt - using yogurt instead of sour cream reduces the calories without sacrificing any of the creamy textures.
    • Mayonnaise - we love Duke's light mayonnaise, again simply because it reduces the calories without reducing the flavor or texture.
    • Buttermilk - adds that signature tangy flavor of a classic blue cheese dressing.
    • White Vinegar - just a little bit is all you need to help balance the robust flavor of the blue cheese.
    • Lemon Juice - we recommend always using fresh lemon juice.
    • Sugar - again just a little bit helps to balance the flavor profile.
    • Garlic - garlic powder works much better than fresh garlic in this recipe.
    • Dill - dried dill is what we used, however, if you had fresh dill, we recommend adding any fresh herbs right before you serve the dressing.

    1. Place the dressing in a jar or preferred storage container.

    Chef Tip

Using dried herbs and granulated garlic will reduce excess moisture and extend the shelf life of the finished dressing. Fresh herbs will oxidize and start to break down the dressing more quickly. If you like the flavor of fresh herbs, we recommend adding them to the dressing when you use it one serving at a time.

What Kind of Blue Cheese Should I Use?

The kind of blue cheese you choose is really up to you and depends on the flavor profile and texture you prefer. Aged blue cheese is going to be a bit drier and crumblier but is loaded with robust flavors. The buttermilk blue we chose for this recipe is a bit milder in flavor, but it's very creamy and rich texture makes it the best kind of blue cheese for this creamy blue cheese dressing recipe.

    Substitutions & Variations

    • Greek yogurt - if you are not a fan of yogurt go ahead and use sour cream.
    • Mayonnaise - we love Duke's light mayonnaise; however, you could use your favorite mayonnaise.
    • Blue Cheese - we love the creamy texture of buttermilk blue cheese, but you can use any kind of blue cheese you love including French roquefort, Danish blue cheese, or leftover blue cheese crumbles.

    Storage & Helpful Hints

Store the finished dressing in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 5 days.

Go ahead and experiment with different types of blue cheese and herb combinations. Create your own blue cheese dressing, have fun with it!
