Homemade apple cider vinaigrette: Why settle for store-bought dressings that are full of artificial flavors? You can make this easy recipe for a healthier and tasty homemade dressing using simple ingredients that are all basic pantry staples. This yummy dressing comes together in just five minutes, making it an easy way to take your leafy greens and hearty salads to the next level!

apple cider dressing in a jar

It's a snow day here in Colorado, so we're not going to the grocery store, and all of these dressing ingredients are already on our shelves. This apple cider vinegar dressing, with its tangy flavor and a touch of sweetness, is the perfect dressing for fall flavors.  We like to make grain salads this time of year, but this delicious dressing is perfect for a simple green salad also.

This apple cider vinegar salad dressing is part of a series that we are doing about homemade salad dressings, ( see Mint grapefruit, dairy-gluten free basic, as well as hibiscus). We use this apple cider dressing to make our barley apple salad. If you are looking for more salad recipes, we have our black eyed pea salad, smoked beet salad, Greek orzo pasta salad, and even gluten free roasted chicken salad with tarragon.

    What You're Going to Need!

the ingredients for the apple cider dressing
    • Extra virgin olive oil - to make the best salad dressing, you need the best ingredients. using pure extra virgin oil of the best quality makes a big difference.
    • Apple cider vinegar - this is really the star of the show. it's in the mason jar with the oil already, just to show what an easy recipe this is.
    • Dijon mustard - this will allow the raw apple cider vinegar to emulsify with the extra-virgin olive oil.
    • Honey - never neglect sweetness as a component when making our salad dressing. we opted for a little honey.

    4. And you can use it right away like we did in our barley and apple salad, or it will last for a very long time in the fridge.

    Chef Tip

This is a perfect recipe to always keep in your bag of tricks. It represents what many chefs refer to as a "build", a simple ratio of flavors to use for recipes of a type. Using this as a template, you can make many other vinaigrettes.

    Apple Cider Vinegar

There is a wealth of information online about the health benefits of apple cider vinegar. We are not nutritionists, so we will advise that everyone does their own research. Unfiltered apple cider vinegar, (like Braggs apple cider vinegar), has been linked to good gut health, among other things, by many experts.

No need to worry about any major allergens or dietary restrictions when it comes to this recipe. It's dairy and gluten free, and vegan, also!

    Storage & Helpful Hints

This apple cider vinaigrette dressing is what is called a temporary emulsion. Make sure that you aggressively shake it up in order to bind it together whenever you use it.

Store this zesty apple cider vinaigrette in an airtight container with a tight-fitting lid in the refrigerator, and it will stay fresh for at least a month!

Can I use a different vinegar?

Of course you can! You can even use fresh lemon juice and make a lemon vinaigrette using this basic build. Just keep in mind that other sources of acid may be stronger or weaker, so start with a small amount and taste as you go. Remember, always season to taste!
